Internal Medicine Residency
Southeast Health is a not-for-profit regional medical center dedicated to providing the highest quality of patient care. As an integral part of our service to our community, Southeast Health is committed to sponsoring accredited programs to train future medical professionals.
Our resident physicians represent the highest caliber of graduates from medical schools in Alabama and worldwide, who seek a supportive environment to develop and refine their professional skills.
We are committed to our resident physicians’ professional and personal development while we ensure safe and appropriate care for our patients. Our resident physicians are supervised by experienced physicians, and play a valuable role in the inpatient and outpatient services at Southeast Health.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Southeast Health Internal Medicine Residency Program is to provide comprehensive Graduate Medical Education training in Internal Medicine to eligible applicants. Through research and improving quality of care for patients, our residents will provide the Wiregrass community with competent physicians that are focused on population health guided by evidence-based medical care to improve the quality of life for their community. Upon completion of the program, physicians will be trained for future leadership responsibilities and for the challenges presented by the ever-changing health care market.
Program Aims
The Southeast Health Internal Medicine Residency Program provides a competency-based curriculum to provide the resident with knowledge, skills and confidence for independent practice and a life time of critical thinking and learning. Through the six core competencies promulgated by the ACGME, the program educates the resident using progressive levels of supervised responsibility in caring for their patients in each of the 16 EPA’s and prepare the physician for independent unsupervised care of their patients. The program will educate, evaluate, and provide the resident feedback on a semiannual basis and the progress of the resident will be monitored using the milestones of each sub-competency. The three-year program provides the resident with supervised clinical and educational work that upon completion will allow the graduate to pass the American Board of Internal Medicine certification examination, and to practice as an Internist or proceed onto fellowship.
Welcome to the Southeast Health Internal Medicine Residency Program. We have worked hard over the last several years to produce a program you can be proud of. We have written a competitive yet flexible curriculum that will prepare you for Primary care, Hospitalist work, or fellowship in any of the subspecialties of Internal Medicine.
Our program is a teaching program, not a working one. The priority of your three years in our residency is to learn through the six competencies the ACGME has directed. In doing so, it will lead toward success in unsupervised practice, passing the ABIM Board exam, and a lifetime of critical thinking. We have assembled a dedicated faculty that is passionate about teaching. Each faculty member is as excited about teaching as you are about leaning and have been selected with that in mind.
Our facilities are pristine, safe and conducive to learning. Our benefit package is one of the best in the country. Our program is focused on your wellbeing and understands the stressors that Graduate Medical Education can bring. The program provides the necessary rigors of training as well as the personal touch of our dedicated faculty. I am certain that your experience in our program will be a positive one. Your training in our program will provide you with all the skills, knowledge and confidence required to deliver excellent medical care to all of your patients throughout your career.
I look forward to being a part of your journey toward excellence and welcome you to our program.
