SAMC residency program receives accreditation
Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) is pleased to announce its internal medicine residency program recently received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Sebastian T. Tosto Jr., MD, internal medicine residency program director at SAMC, received confirmation of the initial accreditation Thursday from ACGME.
“This turns SAMC into an academic teaching center,” Dr. Tosto said. “It puts SAMC on the map with other great teaching medical centers in the country.”
The residency program is administered through SAMC’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) department. James C. Jones, DO, FACEP, medical director of Emergency Medicine, is the Director of Medical Education for both residency and medical student training at SAMC. Dr. Jones said that the SAMC GME department plans to build on the success of our internal medicine program by adding residency training programs in other specialties within the next few years.
Our initial accreditation will allow us to accept 13 medical school graduates into our residency program beginning July 1, 2018. Interviews for residency positions will begin this fall. The internal medicine residency is a three year program and it is open to DO’s and MD’s.
“This has been a team effort,” Dr. Tosto said of receiving the accreditation. “I want to thank the hospital administration and the GME faculty for helping make this happen.”
